The Perfect Storm by Stephen A. Dantes

The Perfect Storm

The calm stalks
The rainbow’s thrill
The night draws into
A day that pleases still
Nothing could be better at that moment
Nature’s attempt to ready the storm

Life, same as usual
Chances on a whim, normal
The sky a clear blue
Till the rain clouds’ grooming
But it is not time yet, true
The storm is only warning

Then, the thunder
The rain
The lightning
They come with much the same
Still hinting at pearly days
Still claims

Time passes with the intermittent rain
The thunder’s clap and the lightning’s wink
And a calm comes to erase the pain
To reassure and to free from a disaster’s stink

Warnings signs gossip of something greater
Yet many comfort in the joy of the calm
Space allows for such propaganda
Until it’s too late for delinquent psalms

Now, the perfect storm;
It makes a landing
When all had calmed
And comfort was pleasing
It hits hard in the weakest place
That which hid no warning
The same which abused grace

The damage is catastrophic
Relentless and historic
To those who didn’t care
Or didn’t see it coming
To those who comfort
In the calm’s deceit
The storm is made perfect
Not by its action or force
Nor its pomp and counted loss
No not that

The storm is made perfect
By the calms that preceded
The same that deceived
With the signs never heeded
