One Pot Jot by Stephen A. Dantes

Garcon, I cool out by de river
Wit one pot in me han
2 pounds flour, me salt, me plate
No meat, but me wan to test dis pan

Me dan start de fire and knead da dough
A lil seasoning, lentils and ting
Cause it’s dumpling I making
But where de meat?
I dunno

See me so hungry and longtime me eat a river jot
A hot day like dat by da river
And me bound to cook dat one pot
Meat or not

In de middle of me stew
When me see me cyan catch no crayfish, no crab
A chicken from nowhere come sit right pon me bag
Like she telling me to, ‘do sumting uh’
And look too like she mad

See, everybody ask ‘why did the chicken cross the road?’
But me dere tinking, dat bird mad!
Dat chicken cross me bag?
Curry or not, chicken bouillon me go have

So me fetch a stone and take aim
Miss chicken completely and boy!
Some man shout out me name
Now de chicken eh move, but look like it start to smile
Bout same time Mr. Fan Chew coming uphill holding he eye

Him start to cuss for him know me good
Me try to explain but him cuss me and me food;
“So is you kill all me fowls for river jot?
Today you pay for me fowls, me eye and me pot”
